Many of the stereotypes that black women have are parallel to the ones that given today. The depictions of African American women are parallel to the ones of Hottentot Venus. Just as Sarah Bartman was placed on stage as a freak, specimen, and beast women today are, too. Their bodies are used as objects and exploited through the lens of women, men, and children. She was the symbol and starting point of many people’s perception of black women.

Even those who argue that black women have a choice in the decisions that the make, in actuality they do not. Exploitation of women’s bodies has been happening for so long it is expected for women’s bodies to be exploited. For example, those that argue and say that women who dance (promiscuously) and in the Rap and Hip-Hop videos do it because of choice. I would heavily argue against this because of the main investors who invest in the women performing such acts would be the white men or men in general. Women in general and especially women of color have no choice in what decisions have no or very little choice in the occupations that they choose.

  1. Ray I love you dearly, but I disagree. I think that if you look around the world is full of both white and black women who have made the choice to not gain fame or riches by these means. Yes I think that you may have a point in that there is a good deal of money involved in these types of activities, but we do live in a world where education is out there and if anyone women, man, black or white wants to gain riches by using their mind they may.
